In Mourning of Professor Chin-Chuan Lee: A Grand Master Who Brought Chinese Communication Research onto the International Stage

By Trisha Lin (ICCA President)

The International Chinese Communication Association (ICCA) deeply mourns the passing of its founding president, Professor Chin-Chuan Lee, in April 2026. Since the 1980s, Professor Lee had long been deeply engaged in international communication research, and in 1990 he established this association (Chinese Communication Association) in Minnesota, United States, greatly enhancing the international visibility of Chinese communication research. For ICCA, the most valuable legacy left by Professor Lee lies in that he brought Chinese communication research into the international academic community, making it an important field of study, and established an essential platform that promotes exchange and cooperation among Chinese communication scholars worldwide.

The ICCA founded by Professor Lee is the first international professional association with the mission of promoting the development of Chinese communication scholarship and community exchange. This vision is not only an institutional innovation, but also demonstrates his outstanding academic imagination and practical capability—bringing together scholars from Europe and America, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and all parts of the world to engage in dialogue, exchange, and collaboration on a shared platform. On the one hand, it provides academic belonging for emerging scholars and master’s and doctoral students; on the other hand, it enables senior scholars to exert profound influence on the international stage. Today, ICCA holds regular paper sessions annually at the three major international associations: International Communication Association (ICA), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), and National Communication Association (NCA), and continues to promote cross-disciplinary dialogue and intergenerational inheritance through receptions and online exchanges. These valuable international connections and academic practices precisely continue the direction pioneered by Professor Lee, moving toward a more internationalized and professional academic realm.

Professor Lee was highly prolific, with students all over the world, and his academic influence extended across the United States, Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. After graduating from the Department of Journalism at National Chengchi University, he went to the United States for advanced study, and for a long time paid attention to and was committed to exploring issues of inequality in the international order. He also actively devoted himself to international academic exchange and public affairs, successively serving in important administrative positions at the University of Minnesota and City University of Hong Kong, cultivating countless outstanding talents. In his later years, he returned to Taiwan to serve as a Yushan Scholar at National Chengchi University, and even when in poor health, he continued writing without rest, completing important works such as “The Internationalization of ‘International Communication’” and “Pathways toward International/Cross-cultural Communication Research.”

Throughout his life, Professor Lee cared about public affairs and also devoted himself for many years to heavy academic administrative work, and selflessly shared his profound leadership wisdom. He once pointed out that leadership lies in “orchestrating individual instruments to produce a great symphonic sound,” and emphasized that academic administration should “treat matters with humor and kindness,” while at the same time respecting the spirit of scholars’ autonomy. These ideas, full of wisdom and inclusiveness, remain important guiding principles for the operation of the association to this day. In our hearts, Professor Lee’s influence comes not only from his outstanding academic achievements, but also from his mentorship of younger generations and his deep care for students. Many important scholars in the field of communication today were trained by him; his receipt of the ICA Fellow and the Audrey Fisher Mentorship Award is precisely the highest recognition of his contributions by the international academic community.

Professor Chin-Chuan Lee was a grand master in Chinese communication scholarship, rigorous in his studies, of eminent academic standing, and cultivated countless outstanding talents, long embracing a deep concern for the world and Chinese communities as well as a far-reaching vision. ICCA is precisely an important practice in which he transformed his ideas into institutions and implemented them as an international academic organization. The International Chinese Communication Association will remember his founding mission and academic spirit, continue to promote Chinese communication research to shine on the international stage, and ensure that the style and spirit of Professor Chin-Chuan Lee last forever.

International Communication Association(ICA)、Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication(AEJMC)、National Communication Association(NCA)三大國際學會中設有固定論文場次,並透過招待會與線上交流,持續促進跨域對話與世代傳承。

International Communication Association(ICA)、Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication(AEJMC)、National Communication Association(NCA)三大国际学会中设有固定论文场次,并透过招待会与线上交流,持续促进跨域对话与世代传承。
